I hate Golf as an idea. It's such a ecologically violent, materially demanding, and class exclusionary game. Every golf course on the planet could be a nature reserve, or a public farming, or a myriad of other uses. But instead they seize up inordinate amounts of land, water, and resources to maintain to keep a few jackoffs entertained for an afternoon while they have an army of servants at their beck and call back at the club house. Not to mention the bonkers amount pesticides on golf courses is environmentally harmful and a major public health risk. I think sport and competition are important parts of a healthy society but Golf is just such an exclusionary game I don't think it has a right to exist. A regular person can't "just" play golf. The amount of initial startup capital to even play the game is absurd. Every Golf club should be metaled down and put into fixing our roads and bridges. It's such a exemplar of suburbia.
It's just a terrible display of how capital seeks what is profitable today, never thinking of the effects or impacts of those choices. No rich cultural advancement has come from Golf. If anything it's literally designed to be a bastion for the wealthy. A walled enclosure that has actively excluded women, minorities, the working class. I hate that we have a society saw that and rather wanting to destroy it made people yearn to be in it. It's just a sport that should not be.
WHY THE FUCK DOES A REGION LIKE THE SOUTHWEST EVEN ALLOW THEM TO BUILD!?!? THE AMOUNT OF WATER NECESSARY TO MAKE A "WORLD-CLASS" GOLF COURSE IS BONKERS! ITS A FUCKIN' DESERT! GOD MADE THEM HOT SO WE WOULDN"T BUILD GOLF COURSE THERE BECAUSE IT'S A DUMB IDEA!
It's just one of the many things I think about. It's so very interesting to think about how the world could be different if we designed it for the fulfillment of everyone's needs rather than the wants of the few.
The funny thing is; Golf doesn't have to suck. Apparently the Scots would just play in whatever grazed over field they happen upon with no special preparation, using rocks and a bent stick. On paper it should be a cheap sport; One club, some balls, and a flag to aim at.
In the middle of Edinburgh there's a public links in the park when you can just rock up and play 36 pitch and putt holes. The nearest pub will lend you clubs and balls when you get a pint. The only thing you have to worry about are dog walkers and the occasional picnickers. It's tight as hell.
this is why disc golf is the superior sport at this point
it's usually played on some natural land with minimal trails and a few meadow-like open sections
there are some golf courses that have tried to use native grasses and such, but the dang ball is so tiny it basically requires giant monoculture lawns across acres of land
yeah theres a big forest nearby to me that has it. i noticed a couple of trees with dinged up bark from repeated blows to it but that is ostensibly better than clearcutting it for a golf course. guy who runs it is a socialist and apparently did some sort of project to crowdfund buying the land and donating it to the parks service on special provisions, which was apparently wildly popular and worked out great for little cost to himself
