The only thing that makes sense to me is that US wants to ensure there's as big a rift as possible between Russia and the west. This will force western countries to become US entirely dependent on US both economically and militarily. The longer the war goes on, the more depleted Europe leaving them with very few options. My expectation is that this will work in the short terms, but as economic situation in Europe continues to unravel, I expect that countries will start rebelling against this.
