    Julius Malema supports LGBTQ+ liberation

According to who? He may say some decent things now and again about LGBT people, but at the end of the day the EFF invited a well known homophobe from Uganda to give a speech at their anniversary, which led to LGBT people protesting outside the venue. This was right after Malema condemned Uganda's homophobic laws, which makes the entire thing more perplexing. Now Malema is aiming to go into an alliance with Zacob Zuma and his new MK political party and has even said that he would accept Zuma joining the EFF. Zuma, among many other things, is a homophobe, and said homophobic things as recently as a few weeks ago. A few years ago the EFF were campaigning to throw Zuma in jail and force him to pay back the stolen money from corruption.

As usual, the EFF does not have a consistent position here.

Lumumba, who has been reported as supporting repression of gay people in Uganda, was invited by the EFF for the party’s ten-year birthday celebration who rented out the hall at UCT (University of Cape Town ).

Triangle Project’s Ling Sheperd said: “UCT prides itself on being the top university in Africa and they always remind us that they are inclusive and diverse and are committed to transformation, so we find it quite hypocritical that they would have a platform for a known homophobic person.”

“Professor Lumumba is very open about his homophobia and bigotry in general. And then the EFF leader Julius Malema was draped in a pride flag in solidarity with the Ugandans not so long ago, it’s just really baffling.”

Lumumba has been a vocal supporter of an anti-homosexuality bill passed in Uganda. The bill recommends heavy sentences, including the death penalty, for homosexuality. The EFF held a picket against the bill last month.

In an interview on DigiTalk TV, Lumumba said he was a homophobe and believed homosexuality could be cured.

EFF leader Julius Malema previously responded to claims he “flip-flopped” after inviting Lumumba, saying: “You don't censor a different opinion on your platforms simply because you disagree. Allowing different views makes a discourse even more exciting.”

Are those the words of someone who "supports LGBTQ+ liberation"? Let's be serious here.
