I assumed ESO was already F2P, apparently not! Is it actually any good to play?

Don't expect it to be anything like the traditional TES games, it's an MMO through and through just with a Skyrim coat of paint. I say this because I got the game for cheap some time ago out of curiosity to see more of Tamriel and I still got disappointed.

So do you still need to play heavily with a group of friends to get anything out of it, or can you play it solo?

I didn't really play for long so I'm not really the best to answer that, but from my limited play time I remember being a decent amount of solo content (your usual fetch quests and whatnot, everything voice acted which is really nice considering it's an MMO) but there's also content that requires a party like dungeons and stuff, the game has your usual tank/healer/dps framework so you really can't escape it.

The overworld can be done entirely solo with a storyline for each of the three factions, but you can also partner up with friends ad hoc if you'd like.

The content that's specifically multiplayer is the dungeons (4-man or 12-man), but you can queue for the former and people will zone chat to organise the latter

It's B2P with an optional premium sub. Probably one of the better ones to use that system. I enjoy it!
