I'm also confused, what's the point of a check mark if you hide it? Just paying Twitter for fun?
Now I have an idea: with the check mark come other privileges like pooling, appearing further up in the feed and stuff, I'm not sure exactly. But that might be a reason to pay for and than people feel ashamed and want to hide it.
You could actually tell who a lot of the hidden checks were because they were ranked high up in the replies but had practically no engagement.
I think these were implemented not too long after the introduction of the subscription?
