I've never done this but I feel like if I was going to then I'd take a bunch of valve caps (or buy them in bulk online for a few bucks) then I'd superglue the lentils in place and give them a quick once-over with a black sharpie.
Feels like most people wouldn't realise that there's a lentil in their valve cap if it was glued in, even less so if it seems innocuous with a quick visual inspection.
Having one flat is a pain but you can sort it out. Having a recurring flat will drive someone nuts.
The lentils are placed inside the valve cap so that when they are tightened in place it depresses the valve stem, causing the tire to deflate.
From what I can tell from the article they just placed the lentils in the valve caps loose so when the person went to reinflate their tire, the lentils fell out.
