Kritenbrink said the incident was part of a broader trend in which China’s military was becoming “more aggressive and assertive at operating in waters and airspace on the periphery of China”.

That's exactly the question you won't see in any western media. I'm not a fan of militarism in any context but whenever these stories come up it's worth remembering that the Empire has a massive military presence surrounding China, not the other way around.
When you make a deal with the empire, don't be surprised when they alter the terms later in their favor.
Considering Australia is more than happy to give the US full control over military/spy bases (Pine Gap) on their territory I'd say this isn't particularly surprising.
The US doesn't give you military equipment, you give the US bodies to operate their military equipment.
