I find it hilarious how the west is now arguing with a straight face that transparency into funding is bad actually. Georgia currently has one of the highest amount of NGOs per capita. An incredible 20,000 NGOs are active in Georgia. This is one NGO per 148 citizens. 90% get their funding from foreign countries.

eh, probably not. if it's anything like the situation here in hungary, most of the protestors are agitprop-poisoned (but unaffiliated) libs who 1) dont know that this sort of law is par for the course in the enlightened west 2) think that even if that's so, it's different because democracy and 3) there's nothing wrong with western money trying to coup a government.

That would be the profile of anybody who's not directly employed by a NGO, but the sheer number of NGOs per capita in Georgia suggests that statistically a lot of the people protesting would be doing it because their own livelihoods would be affected.

oh sure, i just meant that eg my mother was never employed by any NGO and she's huffing this shit full force, so i think it's a western-style lib thing.

ehhh, some sure. but i think NGOs are the only thing keeping some parts of our crumbling social services "working" since orban decided to spend even less on them than the standard neoliberal governments before him...

                    it's a mixed bag.

The NGOs serve exact same role as missionaries did, they do some positive work to ingratiate the population, but the ultimate goal is to colonize and to take away sovereignty.

Those anti governments protestors see the law and "Ruzzian " barbarism . EU chief also said that Georgia can't get into their coven if they pass the bill.

The US law, FARA is far tougher than this proposed law, with further reach and harsher penalties and the US enforces it vigorously.

Most of the EU states have similar laws. It's incredible and shameless how this is spun as some attack on democracy. It's really an attack on US attempts to gain full control of a country on Russia's border to do Ukraine 2 with.

i think this guy (georgian PM) really doesnt want georgia to get dragged into this war, but western-backed libs have been trying.

but this is off natopedia and vague memories of protests in georgia holding up EU flags, etc.

If a coup does happen and Georgia follows Ukraine's example, I'd like to see the faces of the protestors. At some point you just can't feel sorry for people anymore.

I’m going to be so honest right now and I feel kind of bad for saying it but… this is a really silly thing to be protesting. I don’t understand what the problem is, isn’t knowing where an NGO/religious group’s funding is coming from? Especially if it’s from outside the borders? Am I misunderstanding something?

Exactly. I never want to dog on protestors but in this case it’s pretty clear they’re being silly. Transparency is a good thing and I don’t know why they wouldn’t want that. Maybe they’re misinformed about the policy? Because I know that happens… in any case this is annoying and kind of embarrassing.

It is because in all European political spaces, the politics is if anything is against US or EU. It is must be by evil Russians hiding in their bedroom.
