      Thank planners for that. They plant the male trees only when they can because they don't want female trees being pollinated and fruiting. That would be messy. So the idea is that if all the trees are male then no fruit, no mess. But male trees produce loads of pollen. And the same effect could have happened if we planted all female trees but the pollen would be so much less. Or, you know, plant fruiting trees an encourage people to eat the bounty of nature. But no, that doesn't help producers sell fruit. Can't have that.

        I can't think of any ornamental tree that produces an edible fruit, nor any fruit-bearing tree that would make for a good sound screen. Only some would even provide good shade: most fruit trees stay quite short and are very short-lived compared to ornamentals.

        I understand the frustration, but a bunch of slimy little ornamental plums covering the road is a hazard, and there's no guaranteeing females don't fruit as a result of animal activity etc
