Spore is sawdust spawn from north spore and air transfer bags are from Amazon. I have a big storm fall maple I cut up a couple of weeks ago that I’m going to use for substrate. The tricky part will be sterilization. I have a big ass pot that can hold a lot of logs and fits in the oven so my plan is to fill that bad boy up with vacuum sealed logs and bake them for an hour in a water bath at 300

I’m not sure how to do the bags themselves, those I can probably just pressure cook.

Also welcome to /c/mycology :)

So apparently chicken of the woods does best in oak or ash, and maple is not recommended. Luckily I have a young ash I can cut down. I don’t feel bad doing it because the borers will get it anyway in a couple of years.

Edit: my ash turned out to be a hickory so maple it is

That’s cool as hell. Plus you got a hickory tree. Free nuts. I am doing wine caps in a straw/woodchip bed but did not take any precautions on sterilization. No idea whether it will end up working but curious to hear how yours turns out. Sulfureous is a super cool fungus. Have a bunch of it dried from foraging but don’t think I’ve actually tried eating it yet

Wine caps may be fine, apparently chicken of the woods is just not a strong competitor so requires sterilization. Why oak would work and not maple is beyond me. Maple is high in sugar so usually mushrooms do quite well in it. Guess we’ll find out. Of course I back up to some woods owned by a quarry and could try my luck at guerilla harvesting some oak… or even live tree inoculation
