I actually quite like the pastel colours for their buildings. I guess it looks "old" or "out of date" to most people in the west, but I think it feels colourful without being too in-your-face. Plus I imagine that as it fades with time it still looks good, while a lot of brighter colours on western buildings need constant new coats or else they look awful.
