The rehabilitation of Marie Antoinette has been one of the most frustrating things for me to see happen. It makes me irrationally angry. She wasn’t some innocent flower. Yes, she was the target of misogyny and xenophobia (they really hated that she was Austrian), and yes she did marry young but Louis was also young so I think that cancels it out, but in the end she was a grown woman when she was executed and was very much a part of why France was going to shit.
Also I believe her last words were apologizing to the executioner when she stepped on his foot. I think people weep at this because it reminds them of the execution of Lady Jane Grey (the painting).

it all gives me "grand great grandfather did nothing wrong on the cuban slave-life plantation and they shot him anyways" and "all lives matter" energy to me; trying to re-write history and i'm afraid that they're succeeding.

In the end she got executed for being part in a conspiracy to restore monarchism in france. They did not execute her and her husband for being the former monarchs, but for actively trying to fuck over the revolution.
Yes they tried to flee and join the other counter revolutionaries abroad, or something like that. Then because of that they were tried for treason and executed.

It is such an interesting thing to be hung up on. So she apologized to one guy before she died, that doesn’t negate all the terrible stuff she did.
