It's just so annoying that as part of the green new deal we're not investing in new reactor technology and improving safety standards. the DOE and NRC have changed a lot since hanford and west lake, mostly because I think we've done every stupid thing you can do, but the regulations and requirements to make new plants now are roughly as good as most other places.
we do though.... the government operates research reactors that provide radioisotopes for industry medicine and research, and previously reactor design and development were state funded. And the commercial sector is eeking out a slow but existent pace of new installs too.
