I think the commentators say that it was a natural event from the sulphur/salt that was falling everywhere, rather than being a miracle. The miracle was that anyone got out alive at all, she just fucked up the instructions.
Rashi says she sinned by not being hospitable enough to the visiting angels (denying them salt for their food) and therefore got an ironic punishment in keeping with the idea that Sodom was destroyed for its violations of hospitality.
(But that's just Rashi's opinion, I like the idea that it's about letting go of the past. I think Gabriel Marcel says something similar about the gorgon myth, that the irrevocability of the past has a petrifying effect.)
The very horny Christian interpretation notwithstanding, the Jewish position is stated pretty clearly in Ezekiel: "Behold this was the iniquity of Sodom your sister: pride, abundance of bread, and careless ease were hers and her daughters', and she did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."

Couldn't they just put the cliffsnotes in a box? Maybe wouldn't have so many religion flavors

Wasn't Sodom nuked for all the cool shit going on there?
There's actually a verse much later in scriptures that says this was the reason
Ezekiel 16:49 - KJV
Which uuhhh, if true, would not bode well for the USA lol
Religious scholars disagree on whether Sodom was totally based or in fact quite the opposite
What do religious scholars have to say about the pornhub worthy content this scene plays prelude to?
