You can get word and excel running pretty much perfectly under wine but Adobe is a deal breaker. I get by just fine with libre office, google docs, and GIMP, but I don't really do heavy graphic design work.
VMs are easy shit. The hardest thing is if you need to pass through specific hardware to the VM, but that's not even that hard. And you can even run OSX in a VM these days.
