I got the cheapest server available while trying to see whether I could set up Lemmy at all, but as you might probably have noticed it's completely inadequate for the job. It already seems very slow at times and I already had to reboot it twice because it wasn't responding at all.
As it turns out, it's apparently not possible to simply upgrade the server subscription to the next tier that is on offer and I'll probably have to start a new subscription for a better one. Which isn't a big deal because I only paid 8,60€ to rent this server for a year. :D
But if I rent a new server with more power now, it really should be one that will be up to the task for the foreseeable future so I don't have another subscription to pay for that is no longer being used and have to do the whole server migration thing again.
The current server has the following specifications:
- XS: 1 vCore CPU, 1 GB RAM, 10 GB SSD
The other options I can pick from at my provider are as follows:
- S: 2 vCore CPU, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD
- M: 2 vCore CPU, 4 GB RAM, 160 GB SSD
- L: 4 vCore CPU, 8 GB RAM, 240 GB SSD
They do have more powerful ones, but those start to get a bit pricey and I don't want to commit to paying that all out of my own pocket yet. Especially given that this might still flop completely and go nowhere. (Though I do have a very good feeling about this now.)
Is anyone familiar with server hardware and Lemmy resource use? Which of the servers do you think I should use? I would be willing to pay for the L server if you think that will be necessary, but if you think this would be overkill for a Lemmy instance that might see under 100 regular active users, I'd like to avoid those unnecessary costs.
