My brother's pulling my whole family to Signal ("pictures of the adorable grandchild will now no longer be sent over WhatsApp!!!") but I don't know how many of my friends will follow suit. Tbh Signal's not making the best impression at the moment. Their servers are probably overloaded, I get that, but I had messages not arrive while we were playing around with it today and then got spammed with like 500 "bad encrypted message" notifications when something else malfunctioned. If my brother wasn't so dead-set on it I would have uninstalled it. Hope they get it sorted quickly.

I've had better experience with Telegram tbh and the features are a bit more developed.

on the other hand, the crypto behind telegram is not nearly as well audited and studied as the crypto behind signal.

        see https://buttondown.email/cryptography-dispatches/archive/cryptography-dispatches-the-most-backdoor-looking/

also read the reception section of the telegram Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegram_(software)#Reception and compare to the the one in the Signal article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_(software)#Reception

i've been trying to figure out signal vs telegram and it seems pretty divided across the web tbh

edit: yeah this doesn't look good. when i last delved into this a year ago i liked that telegram's server's were distributed across the globe and signal's weren't from what i remember

If it doesn't get better by February I'll see if I can make my own telegram ultimatum 😅
