GNU Guix (which consequently is also the HURD project) is one of the most amazing software projects I've seen today (full source bootstrap, pragmatic Free software adherence). RMS is a relic of his time (especially personality wise and he also doesn't do any programming today) and we are past the point of defending/criticizing him but many of his essays on Free software are very important today and we shouldn't lose sight of them.
I always highly recommend reading Stallman's Free Software, Free Society as an entry point to Free software thought. It's all of his best ideas minus all of his personal baggage. (Should be mandatory reading but Bill Gates already bought the US education system smh)
