And had a pretty good time! Definitely seemed shorter than our games of 40k at around 2.5 hours, even though it was our first game. Tried using 9e Tempest of War missions which was probably a mistake as most of them don't make sense with alternating activations lol (and my opponent was guaranteed victory when he drew Raise Banner, Secure No Man's Land, and Tempting Target all on the same turn). Most of the proxies made sense, though there's the odd weirdness like primaris units having 2+ saves but still only one wound.

Other thoughts: Tanks felt super tough but otherwise weak unless you spend tons of points on upgrading the main guns, which was disappointing. 2k points definitely felt low. Psykers were more complex but pretty fun. The decision of whether to activate what you wanted or something that would probably die if you didn't activate it right now really added some extra pressure that I enjoyed.

RIP my Manticore that died first activation to a Scouted ATV with a Deadly (6) multimelta.

Final Score: Imperial Guard 65 - Space Marines 78

I played OPR for the first time recently too, although I did a smaller 750 point game of AoF just to get a grasp on the core rules of it. Took around 30 minutes to play and was mostly just my friend and I throwing our models at each other instead of doing objectives.

It was definitely enjoyable but I think it's too simple for my taste. Admittedly this is partly due to me doing such a small game without any real objectives. But I'm also just not the type of person this game is made for since most of my favourite wargames are either decently complex or have pretty involved list building, neither of which are the case in OPR imo. I did really like some of its rules though: the morale rules in particular seem really cool as a movement control mechanic and I might try a few more games just to play with it.

If you enjoy Skirmish games too you might like Infinity. You have so, so many options. During Game play when it comes to what you can do and before the game starts when it comes to list building.

The only bad thing I have noticed so far is that there are a lot of units profiles that have rules but no corresponding model. There are also quite a few cases of factions having rules but no models in production. Good new is that you are specifically allowed to proxy as long as the model is from Corvus Belli (you are also allowed to add and replace bits as long as most of the model is still from Corvus Belli)

I've had an interest in trying Infinity but none of the factions have really drawn me in enough to actually commit the time to learn the rules and none of my friends play it atm.

Also tbh that last bit is a positive for me since rules that lack models seem like fun kitbash fodder.

I get the point about factions. For me it was mostly a lore problem since I dig the visuals of most factions (except Ariadna) I wanted to go for Yu Jing first but I really don't vibe with the lore. It reads like someone took the China that exists in the head of liberals, reintroduced an Emperor and send them 180 years in the future. Noooo thanks.

In the end I decided to go for Haqqislam instead, they aren't without problems either but they don't make my skin crawl.

I also agree on the Kitbashing aspect.

True, but I hate 40k as a game. My point of comparison was more AoS since I prefer it.

When I was talking about the list-building though I moreso meant stuff like X-Wing 1e and 2e where it's kinda like building a card game deck. (although from what I've heard 2.5e ruined it, I don't play it anymore so can't comment beyond that)
