500 mph land speed? That easily twice over what even the fastest trains have achieved in the past. Is it really safe to run a land vehicle at that speeds? Surely there must be some negative side effect to running that fast?

Not dunking on the project though this is cool as fuck

So a 500 mph railroad would be for long haul, cross continental trips like the Trans Siberian railway and not what you take getting to work every day?

Have you been in a city with a subway? The speed on the tracks is not the issue. They're fast enough already. The main thing slowing you down is the many stops, it only takes like a couple minutes to get from one stop to the next. So there isn't really a point to faster urban trains. High speed trains are for long distances.

Subways are awesome. I have a car but I prefer not to use it because it is just so much more convenient to use the subway instead. This last year I have to use the car though because of covid :(

But yeah every big city with the capacity to have a subway should have one, it brings everything close, combined with a good bus and tram system. Many people in the suburbs only use their car to get to the nearest subway station. Here you typically only have to wait like 5 minutes for the subway to show up, tickets are around 1.30 euros (and it's not that hard to avoid them altogether), and they go fast af. I wish we had a couple more lines though. One is under construction but it's gonna be years before it's over because everything takes way too damn long in this country. But hey, at least we have subways.

Yeah that's approaching the sound barrier. Idk what affect that would have on the surrounding area of the train for QOL. Tbh this seems like generic really early reporting of one paper that may or may not go anywhere.

You can just run this thing slow (aka normal HSR speed) in urban areas and only let it go full blast once its out in rural areas.

Since this type of train requires laying new track, you can plan the route so that it impacts as few people as possible.
