NATO Secretary: “President Putin declared in the autumn of 2021, and actually sent a draft treaty that they wanted NATO to sign, to promise no more NATO enlargement. … Of course, we didn’t sign that. … He wanted us to sign that promise, never to enlarge NATO. … We rejected that. So he went to war to prevent NATO, more NATO, close to his borders. He has got the exact opposite.”
This is what I wrote to a friend on 27 February 2022: ‘Putin is a dickhead but he didn’t just wake up one day and decide this. The White House has been reducing diplomacy with the Russian Federation and trying to provoke it into harming a more U.S.‐friendly state, and now his government is playing into Washington’s hands; he’s no evil genius, he’s just doing what they want him to do.’
