The War of the Triple Alliance was an armed conflict, which occurred between 1864 and 1870, in which Paraguay and the Triple Alliance, made up of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, faced each other. it was the Bloodiest war in south american history with the losing side paraguay losing close to half its population.

This war began when the president of Paraguay, Solano López, went to Uruguay to help the government of the Blanco Party, which found itself in a civil war against the Colorado Party, which was supported by the Brazilian army.

When Brazil invaded Uruguay, in support of the Colorado Party, Solano López appropriated a Brazilian ship on November 12, 1864, announcing the start of the war the next day. Due to the logistics and support of the Argentine government and the Brazilian armed force, the government of the Uruguayan White Party surrendered and the Colorado Party assumed the government of that country, that is to say that now Uruguay was next to Brazil.

Due to political interests in favor of the White Party, Solano López wanted to carry out troops to Uruguay, but for this he had to cross Argentina and requested authorization; however, this was rejected by Argentine President Bartolomé Miter.

For this reason, Paraguay invaded the Argentine province of Corrientes in April 1865. This resulted in Argentina, who had maintained a neutral position so far, joining Brazil and the Colorado Party of Uruguay. In this way the Triple Alliance was formed and a warlike conflict was unleashed against Paraguay, this country being defeated and the war having ended with great losses in terms of population, territory and economy.
