"Only China is an arguable peer of the United States, only China’s technological and industrial might can hope to match our own, and only China has the capacity to project power globally as well as regionally."

"China offers a somewhat coherent ideological alternative to the liberal-democratic order."

"China’s one-party meritocracy can advertise itself (...) as a successor to democratic capitalism, an alternative model for the developing world."

"The establishment of Chinese military pre-eminence in East Asia would be a unique geopolitical shock, with dire effects on the viability of America’s alliance systems (...) and on our ability to maintain the global trading system that undergirds our prosperity at home."

Love the "we don't like China because it'll prevent us from exploiting poor people in East Asia"

All of this implies that China is a socialist leaning nation that is growing in industrial power that everyone wants to trade with.

I think it is strange that they think that China offering better deals in over-exploited nations to be less exploited is a threat to prosperity at home.

The profits of the large corporations would be impacted but delivering services could still function without hurting consumers if corporate profits are high enough.

You're overthinking it. For the NYT, "The profits of the large corporations would be impacted" = "threat to prosperity at home".

NYT spreading sinophobia and warmongering as usual

    Show

China projects its power globally by building railways, hospitals, and ports. America projects its power globally with bombs and missiles. The idea that China will one day simply slide into hegemony by military means is pure projection from the Yanks.

It's because hospitals, public infrastructure, etc, look like military targets to the yanks. So this is China making it easier for it's drone operators to see what to hit.

China offers a somewhat coherent ideological alternative to the liberal-democratic order.

Liberals are in no position to talk about any ideology's coherence or lack thereof.

When you post archive.today links, 1) I get sent to CAPTCHA infinite loop jail and 2) I have no way of knowing what the original link was, which is ironic because 3) my browser extension would have bypassed the soft paywall automatically anyway. (And no I’m not on a VPN, so that’s not the reason it happens to me.)

    Edit: Found it: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/21/opinion/china-taiwan-war.html

Hmm, I wonder if this is a common thing. Maybe I should use the direct link in future and put the archive link in the comments? Or the other way around?

archive.today guy blocks visits from people who use Cloudflare DNS as they don't send the EDNS client subnet, ironically he himself uses Cloudflare for the website.

Thanks. I’ve confirmed that my ISP is outsourcing its DNS to Cloudflare.

Edit: Anyone who wants to verify this should be able to go here and choose either of the tests: https://www.dnsleaktest.com/

Sure you might think the two proxy wars we’re already in are important, but we really gotta start a new war with the power that wants nothing more than peaceful cooperation.

Totally random and unrelated, but since this is an archive post, I'm gonna ask, does anybody else go into an infinite loop trying to prove you're not a robot?
