I think SciFi tropes are the thing that fucks up your way of thinking about these things, they rarely touch on the metaphysics and philsophy of intelligent AI in general, they just do the classic "sentient AI doesn't have emotions because they don't have the chemicals" or "do robots deserve equal rights", which is fine for a while I guess but it's a puddle deep exploration of the topic.
This might be an artifact of how we talk about them. We discuss them as things happening to subjects, but can there be just pain without a subject to experience pain? Can it be argued that in the end of the day we define the borders subject itself through the qualia?
I don't think anyone is arguing against usefulness of an heuristics concept of self. It's seems like we are predisposed to the this kind of thing which might make a fair bit of evolutionary sense.

Qualia are just qualia. They are not movies that need someone to watch them. They are just instances of subjective experience.
