    I'm not sure what a socialist is...

    ...but I believe: [proceeds to make incredibly socialist argument]

    This is an excellent way to talk about these issues in the united states. Once you let the label land, people have already decided to hear what they want to hear. Yes, it helps for people to hear reasonable things said by self-identifying socialists. But reasonable things are so rarely said in our news and media, your message will reach more people if you just sidestep the identifier.
