I think phones have generally taken over MP3 players because you can do everything an MP3 player does on your phone.

No, but I was considering switching back to having one. I had an iPhone + Linux laptop combination for a while, which makes getting your music on your phone impossible. Now I've switched to a phone with CalyxOS, getting my FLAC & mp3 files on my phone is doable again, so I might not go the route of getting a dedicated mp3 player.
