Unfortunately due to reunification a lot of east Germans are now very reactionary... It's a sad state of things, seeing how the mighty have fallen.
While this true let's not forget that west Germany isn't much better. It's not like the CDU/CSU are THAT far behind the AFD. In fact the current climate in East Germany is the direct result of their politics (that and the left alternative being more interested in petty infighting and splitting up than doing anything meaningful)
Interestingly, support for both the far left and the far right is higher in the new states than in the old ones. All memes aside though, the majority does favor moderate policies.
