when you resize a partition with data, gparted will move the data inside the partition to fit the new size.
imagine you have a 100gb partition with 50gb occupied. now you want to shrink it to 80, if there is stuff in the last 20gb, gparted will move them to available space in the first 80gb, and then make the partition.
still i definitely will not trust it and have backups

you could use topgrade to update, and it will generally update with every package manager available.
i have a manjaro install that has been going for 2+ years. with a Nvidia card.
just read the wiki on every update, and follow instructions.
on install select btrfs as the filesystem and than use timeshift to do backups.
i think you can modify the swipe actions in the settings. and also set them to nothing.
if you are using sync, you can filter instances.
other apps do this too, like connect i think.
i use bismuth / polonium on KDE. both are very bare bone, but it's nice to have a full plasma desktop + tiling.
