I don't regret working for Amazon... for the most part. But that place also messed me up for years. Now i can look back on that place as a learning experience. I hope you get there too.

Bad idea: Tempted by a silicon valley startup because that's what all the cool kids were doing. They were style over substance.

Good idea: leaving my otherwise excellent first real job. I owe them ( slidebook.com ) a lot. I wouldn't be half the developer i am now if they hadn't given me the environment to approach software as a science. That said, leaving was the right call.

Definitely start with a vm. If you run into troubles let me know. I have a YouTube channel where i post nix content regularly.

That said the docs are not as good as Arch. The best way is to read the nixpkgs source. Which is a very high barrier to entry. Otoh, only one repo is required to completely see everything.

Compared to guix NixOS is significantly ahead. "difficult" is to each their own. For me, NixOS is the easiest to do certain things. But those things are what i use a computer for and might not match what you do.

As for docs - nothing beats Arch :)

Have you tried NixOS? I recommend that over guix.

Not new to the technology side. I'm familiar with big data tech; eg several years experience with Spark. I can throw some stuff together with tensorflow. Was once a graphics dev so linear algebra is familiar.

That is a somewhat tongue in cheek comment. I think time zones are silly and people could easily account for the differences of what a particular time point means for them at their location. More realistically, UTC should be the only way a time stamp is stored.
