The only way I see myself ever giving it another go is if I manage to get into my NixOS setup for easy replication or something, too much manual tweaking otherwise.
The compromise I arrived at after I migrated to Linux was booting windows off a VHD file on a USB SSD when I really need it. That way I get a portable, fully performant install without it wasting any disk space or messing with my partitions.
I'm no expert but I see no obvious red flags there, should be good to go!
My first idea was to buy one PC with two GPUs with passthrough of GPU and USB input (sitting anyway close), but I got the impression, that is at this moment more something to tinker, then to run "in production".
I'm under the same impression, I check it every few months but it looks clunky and not worth the trouble. Not something I'd like to rely on right now, that's for sure.
Nice, that's a clean looking setup! Gotta love how flexible Plasma is.
Side note, losing write access to one's own home directory sounds traumatic lol, even more so when you're new to Linux. Glad you stuck with it anyway!
I can only hope so
That's a great idea, I'd absolutely love it myself. Something like adding a flake input and it giving you an overlay with reproducible packages for a lot of games, I suppose. Not sure about feasibility but it sure sounds enticing!
Your average user probably wouldn't be too thrilled about it, but I'm sure Nix nerds would be all over it lol.
That was one of the most unhinged rabbit holes I've been to in a hot second, and I absolutely mean that in the best of ways. Well done and congrats on getting there after everything was said and done!
I've been meaning to experiment with mobile NixOS myself but it's all but impossible to get my hands on a supported device around here. Then again, maybe fumbling around and trying to get it to work at all on an old phone might be fun 🤔
I've always struggled with actually retaining knowledge on how to use the myriad tools you'd usually need to extract/parse data (awk, sed and friends) and this was a game changer. I don't quite daily drive it just yet but when I do need it, it's vastly more ergonomic.
I don't have much experience with similar tools but that looks quite interesting, thanks for sharing!
Lutris integrates with itch.io these days, I haven't used it extensively but it seems robust enough. It should also support your local DRM free games and whatnot.
Good points overall! I'd add that in my opinion "estaremos enviando" is closer to "we will be sending", which also better conveys the odd, misplaced telemarketer politeness vibes it carries.
I was going to say lol, I'd struggle to find anyone who is even aware of it in real life
Yup, it's great! I know btrfs not supporting case folding can be an issue with some games but I personally haven't encountered any so it works for me. Can always come up with a spare ext4 partition with it on if I absolutely need it at some point, I guess.
I've used btrfs for gaming and deduping in particular helps a lot with steam prefixes since it's a lot of individual folders with similar files. I don't have hard data but the before and after comparison I've made after getting my deck from ext4 to btrfs left me more than satisfied. I'd guess compression doesn't hurt either, although again I don't have actual numbers.
Fascinating idea, that was an interesting read! Don't think I'd ever seen something like that done before.
Much appreciated, I'll definitely take a look!
Now that's quite an interesting NixOS setup, I'm especially intrigued by the tmpfs root portion. The link you provided was a great read, and I'll keep this and honestly most of what you've described in mind for when I mess with NixOS again.
Nice to see Guix out in the wild, that looks nice and simple :)
Adding to what others have already said, might be worth checking if Lutris has the game on their database, as it often comes with fixes that way. Even if it doesn't, it's definitely easier to manage the prefix and everything else later on if you install the games through it. Bottles is another option, although more minimalist.
