Some parents I know will squish things like grapes and blueberries before giving them to their baby so that they can get a grip on it with their hands and nascent teeth/gums. Might be something to consider, unless you enjoy those 30 seconds.

A lil pair of those gloves you use to pet hair off of cats. They are v v grippy.
