So, I have been thinking about picking up X4. I know some Hexbear users have played it. My question is, what should I expect? Is it good? Do I need mods, or can I play vanilla? Should I get some of the expansions as well, or is the base game enough?

I'm not a stranger to complex games and working my way through them. I do play Paradox games, for example. I also play a lot of strategy games such as Civ and Total War (even on legendary difficulty). So, the game being complex doesn't really scare me, and I consider it a plus.

Just give me your two cents. It would be greatly appreciated. Even if you haven't played it much, any input would be welcome.

i have put a good number of hours into and really enjoyed x4 over the years
if you have never played an x game before, it will take a bit of getting used to, but i think it's the best one to start with
expect a certain degree of mild jank and a very... idiosyncratic... menu system
it's not terrible by any means, but it certainly takes some getting used to

though it does have a story (kinda, though the expansions might have added to it), it is 99.9% a sandbox game
if you want to run a business empire in space, but also bum around in a ship at the same time, there is nothing better

I dont really play these games for the story. So the lack of a story isnt a problem for me.
