    There's no way anyone ever used to actually carry stuff with one of those twig and hankie getups, did they?

      It's called a bindle - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bindle?wprov=sfla1

      That page certainly implies it was used in the real world, but it's far more common in media and there aren't any citations to support it's use.
