the brutal, completely pointless hazing of residencies combined with the brutality of med school weeds out many compassionate and normal people.

Plus the whole process of going to medical school is expensive. I haven't actually looked at any statistics, but I'm sure people who go to medical school already skew towards upper middle-class psycho families.
