archive.today • Israeli Mothers Knew Their Sons Would Serve. But They Didn't Expect War. - The New York Times

I expected comments would be off by they are on. I guess the Times expected pro-Israeli comments. But that's not what's at the very top.

And, they are fighting for what?

They are fighting for a religious right authoritarian government whose main supporters don't pay taxes or serve in the military.

---

And mothers in Palestine know that not only their draft-age sons, but they, their husbands and their minor children and those of their extended families could be killed at any time, in the course of a vindicative, illegal and politically motivated invasion and bombing campaign.

And "didn't expect war"? After voting in for years a government with no interest in a viable peace settlement?

---

I’m sorry for their anguish and hope their children return whole. There are consequences for the governments we elect.

Rakefet Yoeli’s father was a decorated Air Force pilot who fought in several wars. Her husband was a commander in a tank unit.

“My parents never believed their children and grandchildren would have to join an army, much less fight,” she said. “They thought there would be peace by now.” But now their twin grandsons are fighting in Gaza.

your parents were delusional, you inherited that trait doubly, and I can only hope that your kids break the cycle and redeem you by fragging their officers and either giving themselves up as hostages or, in a far flung perfect world, forming some plf-jewish red brigades and fighting for a real liberation instead.

An obstetrician-gynecologist at Tel Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv, Dr. Yoeli, 54, gave birth to Amit and Roee, 20, after one miscarriage and fertility treatment. Five years later, she had a third son, Uri. The boys grew up proud of their family’s military legacy, and long dreamed of serving in elite combat units.

“I wanted them to play trombone,” said Dr. Yoeli, “but they wanted to be combat soldiers. I couldn’t stop them.”

you couldn't stop them? did you try?

it's odd she would say that, because here's a photo of her dressing her kid as an occupation soldier for a holiday meant to celebrate the prevention of the annihilation of the Jewish people. do German children dress in nazi uniforms for their national holiday?

like holy fuck do you think raising them in a state based on a military occupation of the indigenous inhabitants might place your family and all the inhabitants in a perpetual state of danger? does she even know that the city she raised these children in was ethnically cleansed in 1948 by the very same people she dressed her own son as?

“If no one would do it, who would save us?” Dr. Yoeli asked. ... “All these years, I knew my boys would be going to the army, hoping there would be no conflict,” said Dr. Yoeli.

lady the conflict has been going on since before you were born, every day for Palestinians, even if it never personally affected you.

what really defines these liberals for me is just the sheer ignorance. not even specifically these israelis, just your average comfortable grillman in imperial core countries. they have no conception of even their own history beyond what's spoon fed from state propaganda. any potential point of common ground between them and with the oppressed and exploited people is targeted by this anti-narrative peddled constantly by the state-media.

They're told; in myriads of ways some less subtle than others, in articles written for the technically literate or 30 second news bites tailored to a precise dopamine-attention curve: just stay ignorant. present every crumbling bit from the facade of civil society as separate from all others. each fallen brick is an unfortunate individual and there is no such thing as a wall, but even if there was someone already owns it, to take control and remake it would be scary evil communism.

repeat it every day before your shitty job and we will keep house flippers renewed and the hfcs flowing forever.

it's capital's info-war of scorched earth tactics trying to lay waste to any soil that could have potential for a growing solidarity or class consciousness. being a communist here and talking to people sometimes feels like planting seeds in barren ash, but as the great machine of m-c-m' keeps rattling itself apart I'm finding more and more little bits of green growing up through the cracks. there is no forest yet, but I have to join with others to do what I can to create it.
