edit: I am definitely gonna binge this whole channel. Also I felt so vindicated when he talked about the fiction of long vowel phonemes in American English! I dutifully used them in my phonemic transcriptions for my coursework but never felt like I could actually hear them as longer than the "short" vowels when in similar environment. It didn't seem reasonable that it was just my ear not being sensitive enough since I didn't have trouble speaking and understanding Japanese (where vowel length is phonemic). On the other hand, after hearing his demonstrations of vowel length in British English I now have something new to keep in mind when trying to put on an accent (or ferreting out American imposters).
His stuff is really good, too, if you’re into cunning linguists. https://www.youtube.com/@DrGeoffLindsey
Oh hell yeah, this is right up my alley!
