there are two kinds of internet users when you ask about porn:

    1. "porn is bad, it makes you weak" (subtype of this is the Progressive version, where porn is bad and makes you weak because the porn industry hurts women, which is true, but for some reason these people have literally never heard of any other form of erotic media and act like it's some sort of ontological fact and not something caused by social circumstance)

    2. "porn is good, x minority deserves to be dehumanized even when i get off to them"

edit: sorry, that was an unrelated rant. Gooning is when you play Goonstation. It's a good server!

Why has the discourse regressed to 1. sex-negative anti-porn 70s "feminism" and 2. cumbrained bigoted horny guys :(

No, the feminism is a minority! The majority of anti-porn people just hate it because women bad. Remember, if something seems bad in hellworld, it’s always worse!

Oh, okay! Honestly that's kind of reassuring compared to a revival of awful 1970s "feminism" shit lol

Well… That perspective on porn seems to be the dominant one here and on other lefty areas. I unironically think the Volcel meme severely affected the political takes people have

It should not have; the Volcel meme should function exclusively to keep ridiculous horniness out of a community that is supposed to be comfy and chill. Idk why people look at the Volcel meme and suddenlu become catholics

I think, if there is any credibility to my own conspiracy theory, it’s that it allows people who unironically have sex-negative perspectives to use it as a mask and face no criticism of it, because anyone who criticizes a dumb meme is just ruining good clean fun (not true but that’s the perspective)

For what it's worth as an ace person I do actually appreciate spaces where it's not low-key horny at all times. I originally felt comfortable in places like /r/cth because I knew if someone made a horny comment it would probably get chased off rather than explode into a thread of dozens of people all making me uncomfortable.

yeah which is another aspect of it which is genuinely good. idk what i would even do because getting rid of the volcel meme would cause more harm than the meme itself

Yeah, I don't know either. I feel bad because I have definitely seen it make some people uncomfortable because of the sex-negative angle, but I'm not convinced it would be helpful to remove it outright either.

maybe we need to genuinely push it farther. start stealing so much dumb stuff that conservatives say as part of their brainworms until anyone who unironically agrees with it is forced to self-crit. but since it would stay around as a meme it would still work to prevent weird discussions
