On this day in 1894, the anti-colonial Donghak Peasant Rebellion began with the "Gobu Uprising", where 1,000 peasants stormed the county of Gobu, freeing prisoners, occupying government buildings, and causing the county ruler to flee.

The Donghak Peasant Rebellion was an uprising that took place in late Joseon-era Korea during the 1890s. "Donghak" refers to a religious movement, founded in 1860, which preached for social equality and the uplifting of the peasantry. Choe Jeu was executed by the state in 1864.

Amidst a backdrop of growing foreign influence in Korea (which would eventually lead to colonization by Japan), Donghak peasants rebelled against oppression by feudal rulers. The uprising began in the county of Gobu in Jeolla province, where the magistrate had extorted vast amounts of wealth and forced the peasants to build a reservoir.

On January 10th, 1894, approximately 1,000 peasant rebels gathered at an empty horse ranch, from which they split off into two separate armies where they successfully destroyed three of Gobu's four gates, occupied government offices, and set about destroying prisons and freeing the people held in them.

As rebels successfully defeated government forces, unrest would spread across the country, and the panicked Joseon dynasty called for Chinese Qing dynasty for support. Doing this, however, aggrieved the Japanese government, which was competing with China for influence over Korea.

Japan invaded Korea, occupying Seoul, triggering the First Sino-Japanese War. Following a temporary truce, the peasant rebellion would resume in October, this time directed towards the Japanese occupation.

The Japanese proved successful in defeating the uprising, however, continuing to quell rebels through 1895. Korea would become increasingly absorbed into Japan's sphere of influence before official annexation in 1910.

I clicked on one of the YouTube videos someone shared on hexbear, and whoever shared it left the tracking part of the link attached. Now I know that someone's YouTube feed consists of incel videos about IQ and Canon DSLR cameras.🧐 To prevent this in future, please delete everything after the question mark in the YouTube links. Keep your YouTube feed private.

I went on the trueanon subreddit (yeah Reddit I know), and clicked on a YouTube link with trackers there too for comparison. Their feed was full of news about Israel - Palestine and the tunnels in New York, along with Epstein island and Ukrainian women in the military 👁️.

Will go on the deprogram subreddit next for a final comparison.

The deprogram's feed was full of stuff about how the Tesla cybertuck sucks, celebrity gossip about Ice Cube and Jay Z, body language tips for men 🤔, and private prison abolition.

I'm begging you all to please remove the trackers from your links. The Trueanon weirdos had the most normal YouTube feed. That's an embarrassment.

I didn't open links with trackers usually because I'm concerned about my own privacy and didn't want my YouTube account linked with weirdos on the internet, but it's too late for that now lol. I feel like directly responding to someone about their YouTube feed is way too rude though. This was more of a PSA to try get people to stop sharing links with trackers, just delete everything after the question mark in the short links folks. I might look if I can find something on other subreddits or lemmy communities and see what their YouTube feed is like.

I compulsively click on links and I've found way scarier people in my broad & relatively benign White Hat cyberstalking. Dudes watching unsecured cctv & shit

I feel like directly confronting people about extremely mundane and harmless shit from an anonymous account is alarming but it can be pretty funny. On reddit it's no big deal

Just for you I did this on the air crash investigation subreddit and I got recommended videos about Corvette sports cars, styles of men's facial hair, dashcam footage, final images, and something about North Korea launching nukes. Obviously stuff about passenger airliners and private jets, but that's to be expected.

Wait how do you view the tracking stuff from a link?

After you open a YouTube link with the trackers attached (all the text after the question mark), check out your recommend videos. You'll see some that have nothing to do with your previous recommendations or the video you are watching. Those are the recommendations YouTube got from the trackers.
