Funny enough, i actually got the amphetamines simply because i was experiancing symptoms. And then the diagnosis came because they worked how theyre supposed to.
Tbh this is basically the way that psychiatry does it. (Which is a little concerning because, at least as per Dr Russell Barkley, you get about 80% of ADHD patients responding to either amphetamines or methylphenidate - the efficacy of which is the envy of the rest of psychiatric medication but this leaves roughly 20% of ADHDers out in the cold.)
They either identify enough in you to make diagnosis a likelihood or they put you through assessment criteria but basically they're waiting to see how you respond to stimulants before they are confident in confirming a diagnosis.
I had been diagnosed with ADHD by a therapist. When I went into a psyc to receive my gogo pills and they worked they said that I have a, "true adhd." which I thought was wild. There are definitely psychiatrists who will prescribe stimulants to people they don't think have ADHD but who have adhd symptoms. Like, I had a psychiatrist who refused to prescribe me stimulants because he decided that he couldn't confirm that I had ADHD symptoms before age 16. But, he also said that he prescribes stimulants to people without adhd who might be helped by it. fucking hated that guy. exactly the kinda shit that never happened to me while I was living as a man.
