its honestly a pretty key part of the story, the whole reason handmaidens are a thing is because most women are infertile as a result of nuclear fallout (which is unlikely anyways), and then powerful men use this as an opportunity to curtail womens rights in order to be able to have more children. the outfits are pretty silly too, ngl. its a pretty nonsensical series, really.
