Were I the public face of the website tumblr.com there is precisely one group of people with whom I would not engage negatively, and it would be gender and sexual minorities. Were CEOs trying to be “personal” with their customers? Or did this only occur after social media became the primary way of communication. Usually these people would just hire a PR agent and ghost write their statements.
