Those Simpsons and Big Bang Theory and Star Trek Discovery and Rick and Morty mentions/appearances contributed to that, along with a general craving among otherwise secular and credulous computer touchers to have a grand nerd rapture promised to them, often branded as "the Singularity(tm)."
pressed their buttons pretty effectively by tweeting about "genetically engineered catgirls for domestic use" and other pandering shit like that, and that doesn't even get into the "MANKIND MUST LEAVE THE CRADLE HUMANS MUST BECOME AN INTERPLANETARY SPECIES" chanting from that same crowd.
