I will say first that I don't think this is actually any erosion of democracy or whatever. But since most elected judges and DAs try to win elections by being "tough on crime" and increasing conviction rates, I do think that this might not be a good idea long term, since reactionary elements like the petite bourgeois and local gentry focus disproportionately on these elections.
