in the early 60s, when the Congo attempted independence from western colonial powers, a private military force of Belgian and British funded mercenaries attempted to decapitate the independent government and launched a coup. the government plead for help from the UN, and Irish peacekeepers were sent. ultimately, the Irish peacekeepers were overwhelmed and taken prisoner and the entire event was memory holed by the west. there's a movie about it. it's fucking nuts.
