Théophile Ferré was a leader of the Paris Commune who was executed by the French government on this day in 1871. Ferré personally authorized the execution of the archbishop of Paris and was the first of 25 Communards to be executed.
Little is known about Ferré's early life, before his participation in the Paris Commune. After Paris was seized by revolutionaries in March 1871, Ferré served on the Commune's Committee of Public Safety, a body given extensive powers to hunt down enemies of the Commune.
On April 5th, the Commune passed a decree that authorized the arrest of any person thought to be loyal to the French government in Versailles, to be held as hostages. Prominent figures arrested included a Catholic priest Georges Darboy and the archbishop of Paris. The Commune hoped to exchange their hostages for Louis-Auguste Blanqui, a revolutionary and honorary President of the Commune, imprisoned by the state.
Following the events of the "Bloody Week", in which the French government summarily executed many suspected Communards, Ferré authorized the execution of several hostages, including Darboy and the archbishop.
After the resistance of the Commune collapsed, Ferré was captured by the army, tried by a military court, and sentenced to death. On November 28th, 1871, he was shot at Satory, an army camp southwest of Versailles. He was the first of twenty-five Communards to be executed for their role in the Paris Commune.

Just got reminded of the existence of lights camera Jackson
He complained that the new Nosferatu movie had “artsy look and camerawork”, I hate when the makers add those to my movies!!
It isn't even out yet. Also it's fucking Robert Eggers. Is the guy also gonna get mad at incorporating period accuracy in both an aesthetic way as well as a cultural way between characters that draws you in to a different place and time with masterful effectiveness? I am sooooo hyped tonleave Christmas family bullshit, go home and grab a fat bottle of red wine to sneak into the theater, have a wee edible and smoke loud on the way there and watch William Dafoe do a scene with 2000 rats. Last time I was this hyped for a movie it was The Lighthouse and was partially cause I knew about it vaguely prior to everyome. It was shot exterior a 2 hour drive away and interior across the street from my elementary school. So I knew Dafoe and Robert Pattinsom were filming and in town and then later it was for a movie by the VVitch guy and needless to say I was stoked.
Yeah very hyped for this. The fact that one of the slop “critics” hates it makes me only more excited.
He's easily my favorite filmmaker right now. I know he'd had the basic plans and a script more or less finalized before he even did The Lighthouse but felt he should probably earn some credibility before remaking a classic. So it's something that's been cooking for a long time and I am also a huge FW Murneau guy and fan of the original. It's so much of the things I love coming together that it's gotts be great.
