Affordable my ass. Considering those are 17 stories high they're probably in (or near) Moscow and expensive as hell.
Not when they were built, they were built with a 2 ruble capped rent.
They weren't technically expensive back then but you had to wait for a long-ass time to get one. A lot of young families had to live with their parents in like two-room apartments. Speaking from experience.
I'm so sad that the USSR collapsed before they could develop a robust internal economy that was able to keep up with demand. At least China seems to have it figured out and it building entire cities to house people in no time. The soviets were just so slow about it.
but building affordable housing is communism and we don't want that. The best solution is obviously to introduce a tax credit subsidy on landlords who rent houses at below market rates to tenants making 75% or less of area median income.
It's my god-given American freedom to have 40% of my income extracted by a leach in order to live anywhere near my job
