Great overview of the immigrant experience, including prejudice, pressure of assimilation, intra-immigrant conflict, labor exploitation, etc. Just a pretty good story for those who want to learn a bit about the Gilded Age. Would make a great companion to The Jungle.

Used to make my high school students watch this every year. They actually liked it, especially because most of them were first or second generation immigrants (mostly from latin america, the Philippines, or India, Vietnam, etc) and could see a lot of continuities compared to what their families experienced
