Just use Element! It's open source and E2EE by default.
It's also based on a federated open source protocol called Matrix so you can actually run your own server if you want to. Element is very easy to use and you don't even need a phone number!

You can do the same thing with any number of 3rd part apps. Whatsapp, signal, telegram ect.
That’s true, but they would also need the app, right? With iMessage it’s just right there in the messages.
I mean it's good to standardize on an app. iMessage would be as good as any, except that it's Apple exclusive. By using it you exclude everyone who doesn't have an Apple device.

Interesting interesting, I'll give it another look, I would prefer that something FOSS becomes the standard, but it seems a bit unwieldy to laypeople at the moment.
