I'm also kind of uncomfortable because "the semi-mythic narrative that every trans person was born with this innate essence in them" is the only thing keeping liberals from joining the terfs and conservatives in being transphobic. It's in all our mainstream representation in the media. It is literally the only reason we've made any advances at all with transhealthcare. Hell its the only thing that makes me hopeful for myself and my current journey with gender. Without that narrative they can argue that our transitions are a result of self hatred and that the stressful things we do to our bodies just to feel comfortable are unnecessary and harmful. I bet liberals would start thinking that we should be saved from ourselves. Its just gross.

I know some of your comments were deleted, but I just want to say this is an extremely important conversation to have if we are in a safe space, which this mostly is (except for the wreckers etc I mean).

I know that mythical narrative isn’t universal, but we must admit amongst ourselves it is a vital political narrative

Truth is a wonderful ideal, but there are other, often competing, objectives.

Public health officials have to make this choice all the time. The “public” is not real good at nuance.

My lib mom tried to pull the detrans argument on me (pushing the lib we-need-to-be-very-careful narrative). I said, So. What. Even if it is a mistake for a very very small percentage, that is no reason to create barriers for the other 99% . The far far greater suffering and injustice would be caused by blocking access to medical treatment. I think I got through to her.

That's a great angle to take. I've basically just had to lie to my cis lib friends and tell them that Lupron isn't dangerous to get them on board with it. It's really easy to pretend that puberty blockers being dangerous is something conservatives made up to be shitheads.

Frankly these drugs are risky even for trans kids who don't detransition. My view is that the danger is worth it and that lying about it is worth it. We all must remember that public opinion is very important, because right now there are a lot of doctors who are aware of the dangers and the only thing keeping them silent is public backlash/cancellation of previous doctors who spoke out.

I guess I shouldn't alienate comrades here for the sake of "public opinion" since the public is nowhere near this board.
