Based off this video, the opposite seems to be the case. Here he sounds like he is very slowly trying to piece together the proper pronounciation while reading off a statement. In English he is much more fluent.
I think they were mostly referring to his lack of ticks when speaking it. Also possibly writes better in it, but yeah the pronunciation here sounded pretty basic to me (even though I don't speak it).
Spanish has way fewer sounds, but he still mixed up ll/j/h several times, he probably overcorrects from French (he studied in France) and is definitely making an effort, which I think is why the tics reduced

His spanish here is tortuous, but his english is unberable to listen, at least to me.
